Today, with heavy hearts, we gather to lay to rest one of our own — a young life, a future full of promise, tragically cut short. The Walter Sisulu University student who was gunned down during a protest three days ago will be buried this morning in his home village of Masakala, just outside Matatiele in the Eastern Cape.
His death has left a deep scar not just on his family, friends, and fellow students, but on all of us who believe in the right to stand up and speak out. He was more than just a student — he was a son, a brother, a friend, a dreamer fighting for a better future, for dignity, for what he believed was right.
What happened three days ago should never have happened. No voice raised in protest should ever be met with bullets. No call for change should ever be answered with violence. As we bid farewell to this young man today, we are reminded once again of the long road still ahead of us in our pursuit of justice, equality, and peace.
To his family in Masakala, to his friends, classmates, and all who loved him — we stand with you in grief. We carry his memory forward, and we honor his courage by continuing to fight for the future he believed in.
