I was deeply saddened to hear about the devastating news coming out of the Democratic Republic of Congo. On Thursday, the rebel-appointed governor of South Kivu province confirmed that at least 10 people lost their lives following a tragic gold mine collapse in the eastern part of the country.

Incidents like this highlight the ongoing dangers faced by artisanal miners who work in incredibly hazardous conditions, often with minimal oversight or safety measures. These miners, many of whom are simply trying to make a living in one of the world's poorest yet most resource-rich nations, risk their lives daily in search of precious minerals like gold.

While full details are still emerging, it’s known that eastern DRC has long struggled with instability, driven in part by the competition for control over its vast mineral resources. Rebel groups, illegal mining operations, and lack of regulation all contribute to a volatile environment where tragedies like this are unfortunately far too common.

My thoughts go out to the families who have lost loved ones in this horrific accident. It’s a painful reminder of the human cost behind the global demand for gold and other precious resources. We must continue to advocate for safer working conditions, more accountability, and long-term peace in the region.
