Khune Raises Eyebrows at Pirates’ Timing – And I Think He’s Got a Point

Kaizer Chiefs legend Itumeleng Khune recently shared his thoughts on a rather surprising move by Orlando Pirates – the announcement of head coach Jose Riveiro’s departure. And honestly, I can’t help but agree with him.

Khune questioned the timing of the announcement, and it’s a valid concern. Why would Pirates choose to drop such a bombshell at such a critical point in the season? Whether we like it or not, football is as much a mental game as it is physical. Players feed off stability, clarity, and momentum – and when a major change like this is made public just before key fixtures, it’s bound to shake things up.

Let’s be real – Riveiro has been a pivotal figure at Pirates. His tactical approach, his leadership style, and his connection with the players have shaped the team’s identity. Announcing his exit now could easily cause confusion or even disrupt morale in the dressing room. I mean, imagine preparing for a must-win game while also digesting the news that your coach is leaving. It’s unsettling.

Of course, we don’t know what’s happening behind the scenes. Maybe there were leaks, or internal decisions forced their hand. But from the outside looking in, the timing feels off – and Khune was right to point that out.

So, do I agree with Khune? Absolutely. In football, timing is everything – and this announcement, at this stage, could have a ripple effect that might just cost Pirates more than they bargained for.

What do you think – smart move or self-sabotage?
